FAQ

How much does it cost to replace brake pads in a car?

The cost of replacing brake pads depends on the vehicle model, the type of parts used, and the service center. For a passenger car, labor for one axle usually costs around PLN 100–250, plus the cost of the brake pads. For vans and trucks, the cost is higher due to larger components and a more complex braking system. When replacing the pads, it is also worth checking the condition of the brake discs, calipers, and brake fluid.

How long does it take to replace brake pads in a car?

Replacing brake pads on one axle of a passenger car usually takes around 30–60 minutes. The service may take longer if the calipers need to be cleaned or repaired, the brake discs need replacing, or some components are seized. In trucks, the service may require more time due to the design and size of the braking system. After installation, the mechanic should also check that the brakes are operating correctly before returning the vehicle.

What should you avoid doing after replacing the brakes?

After replacing brake pads or brake discs, you should avoid hard braking and keeping the brake applied for long periods when the components are very hot. New pads and discs need time to bed in properly. For the first 200–300 km, it is advisable to brake smoothly and avoid unnecessary overheating of the braking system, unless the component manufacturer recommends a different procedure.

How should you drive after replacing brake pads?

After replacing brake pads, you should drive more gently for the first few hundred kilometers and brake with sufficient anticipation. New components need to bed in so that the pad surface works properly with the brake disc. It is advisable to avoid hard braking from high speeds and excessive brake overheating. The exact bedding-in procedure depends on the pad and disc manufacturer, so their recommendations should always take priority.

Which brake pads wear out faster: front or rear?

In most passenger cars, the front brake pads wear out faster because a greater share of the vehicle’s load is transferred to the front axle during braking. However, this is not true for every vehicle. ABS/ESP systems, driving style, braking system design, and load distribution can all increase rear pad wear. In trucks, wear also depends on axle configuration and vehicle load, so the condition of the brakes should be checked on all axles.
